For me, Frankie Laine is the best singer of Western songs, ever.
That's the "Western" in "Country and Western". I don't know how
these two styles got associated with each other as the styles 
are very different.

The "cute kid" image of Shirley Temple is made from combining 
her acting skills with her singing, creating an extremely
expressive voice. This does not come naturally. It is the 
product of hard work (I used to train as a singer when I was
a boy). Her achievement is a great one for such a young 
person. For me, that makes her one of the greatest singers 
of all time.

I used to be a solo boy in a church choir. I practised
the following song a lot but my voice wasn't good enough 
and I did not have the range to comfortably hit the top 
notes. I was 12 years old at the time and my voice was 
beginning to "go". My voice broke when I was early 13. 
It still gives me a sore throat just listening to this 
song.

Here is a solo boy doing a modern song. Note the way he 
rolls his "r"s. All solo boys are taught to do that. It's
because in a church, the sound of the "r" is lost when 
you project your voice at the ceiling so it has to be 
accentuated so that it can still be heard.

Here is Aled Jones singing this song both before and after
his voice broke. It is so sad to me when such a gift of a 
male soprano voice is lost due to natural aging. There is a
way of extending that voice into later life but I never 
fancied having the operation.
